What is Students in Action?Students in Action is part of the national Jefferson Award Foundation; a national service organization that focuses on community impact and inspiration. We plan and carry out a year of service that is judged in late April. In the 2015-16 school year, our team was the national winner of the Gold Service Award from the Jefferson Foundation. We earned the award through our focus on heart health and CPR.
Last year, our year of service revolved around the theme "Health Yourself" and improved the physical, mental, and spiritual health of our students, faculty, and community. |

Last Year Project Descriptions
Relationship Education Project/ Bar Flyer Project:
We have met with Safe Harbor and have taken the Relationship Education Project training to combat teen dating violence, and integrated it into Freshman Success class. With the Julie Valentine Center, we have introduced the “bar flyer” project. A safety flyer and training for local bar and restaurant owners that offers a way out of dangerous situations with the help of bar/restaurant staff. We are also acting as a forum for the Julie Valentine Center so they can better meet the needs of teenagers.

Hurricane Matthew Supply Drive:
At the beginning of the year, our state was affected by Hurricane Matthew. Our school collected and donated 3 car loads of needed relief supplies for the victims of this disaster which we sent directly to the Lowcountry Food Bank.
Guardians Ad Litem Clothing Drive:
One great service project in October was when we partnered with the South Carolina Guardian ad Litem program. Because most of the clothes donated to the Department of Social Services are for young children, we focused on collecting clothes for ages 12-18. Our fellow classmates really rose to the occasion and donated over 900 pounds of clothing.
Body Positivity Project/ Mirror Messages:
The Eating Recovery Center was a wonderful partner for the Body Positivity showcase. We received over 100 examples of student artwork, had a show, and displayed it in the student center at Greenville Tech College. The display was viewed by over 300 visitors during the two week period that the showcase was running.
Another exciting project we are starting in the next few weeks is mirror messages. We wrote positive messages on the mirrors in the bathrooms around campus, along with hanging up tear-off compliment flyers. |
Heart Month:
Students in Action gave a presentation on how to be heart healthy. February 10 was designated as wear red for heart day. Students were all treated to smoothies made by our team.
CPR Continuation:
Interfaith Festival:
Our Interfaith Festival was on April 15th at One Main Plaza in downtown Greenville. From 1 to 4 p.m. organizations of many faiths will have booths, games, and fun all with the purpose of promoting understanding between our religions.
SC District Policy:
We have been working to create a policy for the SC Charter School District that will outline clearly for students, teachers, and faculty exactly how to handle situations involving suicide or suicidal behavior.
